Meet the Coaches

Nothing has a greater influence on the quality of children’s sports than the excellence of the coach. The Hurricane Swim Club staff includes four professionally trained coaches. Together, these coaches have amassed over 10 years of professional coaching experience.

As members of the American Swim Coaches Association, they have access to the most comprehensive training and certification programs for youth coaches of any sport in the United States. Certified coaches in USA Swimming programs possess training and experience in the physiology and psychology of adolescent development.

Our highly qualified coaching staff assures that the time your children spend in swimming with HSC will be quality time.

Photo of Butch BabinButch Babin, Head Coach, grew up in the greater Bangor Area graduating from John Bapst High School in 1980 in its last year as a Catholic High School. Butch attended the University of Maine and graduated from Husson College in 1984 with a degree in business. He has been involved with competitive swimming since the 1970′s as an official, a parent, an age group swimmer at the Bangor YMCA and a coach. Butch coached at the Bangor YMCA from 1994 – 1998. Butch joined HSC in May 2005 as an assistant coach. He took over as Head Coach in the fall of 2005 when the team had only 20 plus swimmers. As of today, Butch has grown the team to 80 plus swimmers. Butch was chosen Maine Swimming, Inc. Coach of the Year in 2010 and was the Head Coach for the 2010 Winter Maine Zone Team. Butch is a current member of the Board of Directors for Maine Swimming, Inc holding the title of National Times Chair. Butch currently lives in Bangor with his wife Christina who teaches in the Bangor School Department. He has a 23 year old son, Brandon, who is in the United States Army, and is currently overseas. His oldest daughter Gabrieal (20), was an outstanding swimmer for Bangor High School. Gabrieal was a member of back to back Girls Class A State High School Swimming Championships from 2005-2007. Gabrieal also swam for HSC for seven years. She currently attends Wheelock College in Boston, MA. Butch’s middle daughter, Hilary (18) was a two sport athlete at Bangor High School. She was the starting Varsity Goaltender for the Bangor Rams Field Hockey Team during the 2008 season. Hilary has been a member of back to back to back Girls Class A State High School Swimming Championships from 2005-2008 and his youngest daughter Olivia (6) is also a member of HSC. Butch was the interim Head Women’s Swim Coach at Husson University in 2007-2008. He is currently the assistant coach at Husson University coaching under former University of Maine Head Coach Jeff Wren. Coach Babin.

Photo of Hannah BranchHannah Branch, Assistant Coach, joined HSC in September 2008. She is currently attending the University of Maine majoring in Business. Hannah started swimming at the age of five for Twin Cities Swim Team (TCST). Swimming with TCST for four years before transferring to Kennebec Valley YMCA (KVY) for two years. While swimming at TCST and KVY, she set numerous team records and placed first in a number of events at the YMCA New England Swimming Championships. She then headed south to swim for the Westbrook Seals (SEAL) and Costal Maine Aquatics (CMA) setting numerous team records. While swimming at CMA, she set 13-14 year old Maine Swimming (MSI) SCY State Records in the 100 Fly and the 200 Fly which she still holds. She has attended numerous All Star, Eastern Zone and Sectional Meets. She attended Bonny Eagle High School (BEHS), swimming there for four years. She was a team captain her junior and senior swim seasons. She set a pool record at the Riverton School and Community Center in Portland, ME in the 100 Fly when she broke the previous record held by Olympic Swimmer, Jenny Thompson. She holds numerous records for New England, SMAA and BEHS. She was a high school Class A State Champion in the 100 Fly for two years and the 200 Free for one year. She was the first female swimmer from the State of Maine to win two events at the New England High School Swimming Championships. She has been a member of the SMAA and Maine State High School All Star Swim Teams all fours years of her high school swimming career and a member of the 2006-2007 SMAA All-Academic Team. She was elected the Girls Class A Swimmer of the Year in 2005-2006. Hannah will be a welcome addition to the team by helping in stroke development with our younger swimmers and with her enthusiasm, excitement, energy, and commitment.

Photo of Julie MacleodJulie Macleod, Assistant Coach, joined HSC in September 2006. She swam for the Hurricane Swim Club for over eleven years and swam all four years for Bangor High School where she was a team captain during her senior year. Julie was a member of two Class A Girls High School State Championships. She has been a swim lessons instructor and lifeguard for 17 years, Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor for 10 years and an United States Water Fitness Instructor for the past 6 years. In 2005, Julie was the recipient of the American Red Cross Hero of the Year Award. Julie graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in Elementary Education. She has eight years of classroom teaching experience. She is currently the Assistant Pool Director at the Lura Hoit Pool in Hampden.

To promote a unique, recreational competitive swimming experience for the young people and families of the greater Bangor area. We exist to instill a life-long love for the sport of swimming and to empower children through the consistent practice of teaching skills while providing fun and safe opportunities in which they can achieve goals in all aspects of their lives.
